Itinerary description
The National Wildlife Refuge sits on the south side of US-41 and runs from Collier Seminole State Park about 5 miles to Port of the Islands. In that 5 mile stretch there are 4 canoe trails headed south into the marshes. The trails are navigable only during wet season or after heavy rains. Two trails, 1 and 3 are accessible from the roadside. Trail 4 is protected by a guardrail, and Trail 2 is from a 20-car parking lot at the “Marsh Trail”.
There is a marked trail straight ahead that's hard to miss. We veered off to the west just after the first few markers and through a spartina marsh. Only attempt this if the area is well-flooded. We found a connection to a lake system and then a cut out of the lakes to the east that we flagged, and then south to a dead end marsh and back out to where we found the entrance to another long lake, and out and then back north.
The water was so high that we were able to paddle anywhere that we didn't run into a green wall.
