Itinerary description

NWR Trail 3 is about 0.6 miles east of the Marsh Trail parking lot on the south side of US-41. There's a signpost with a reflector you can see at night. After you unload your craft, park off the road shoulder against the vegetation to stay as far from the traveled lane as possible.

NWR 3 goes south for a while and then turns west (right) at the blue arrow and where we turn east (left) toward the NWR 4 marsh.

We launched on a moonless, overcast, windy, wet morning about an hour before first light with the wind at our backs. If you look at the southernmost point of the paddle, you'll see that we might have gone about a quarter-mile farther if we could have found that final cut.

We did have a little trouble finding one of the cuts near the end. You can see the back and forth on the track. Sometimes everything out there does look alike, and without the Sun to the east, it was hard to stay on course.

The paddle back onto the wind was exhilarating.
