Itinerary description

The lower Nicomekl River from Elgin Road Bridge to the ocean by Crescent Beach is a calm stretch of river to practice and enjoy paddling in relative serenity. No roads run along the shore and the motor boat traffic is usually light with no jet skis allowed and no through traffic due to the dam under Elgin Road Bridge. This can be done with a SUP, canoe, or kayak. A canoe/kayak and rowing club operate out of Elgin Heritage Park, which is on Crescent Road in White Rock, about a third of the distance from King George Highway west south west to Crescent Beach. There is limited and free public parking at the site, and the boat ramp and low dock (5-10 cm above the water surface) offer good launch choices.

Elgin Road Dam and Launch Point

The dam is a complete closure of the river. Sorry to all you migrating salmon! It is used to release fresh river water at low tide but keep salt water from penetrating upstream to the farmland above when the tides are up.

Elgin Heritage Park

This is the best launch site on the lower Nicomekl. There is a launch ramp for trailers that works for smaller boats or you can launch off the floating dock, which is a very nice low height above the water.

Crescent Beach Marina is just inside the railway bridge, and sells gas for power boats. Another few hundred meters beyond the bridge is Crescent Beach.
