Itinerary description
The National Wildlife Refuge sits on the south side of US-41 and runs from Collier Seminole State Park about 5 miles to Port of the Islands. In that 5 mile stretch there are 4 canoe trails headed south into the marshes. The trails are navigable only during wet season or after heavy rains. Two trails, 1 and 3 are accessible from the roadside. Trail 4 is protected by a guardrail, and Trail 2 is from a 20-car parking lot at the “Marsh Trail”.
Canoe Trail 3 is about 2/3 mile past the entrance to the Marsh Trail parking lot heading east. There's a partially hidden sign post on the south side of US-41 and you can see PVC markers in the distance. Follow the trail markers down to where the trail turns west (right), BUT turn east (left) into that mangrove tunnel. From here on in you should be proficient with your GPS as there are no markers other than the occasional flagging we left that might still be there and badly faded. Feel free to add your own flagging. We use flagging to find our way back.
Remember- when all else fails, the sun sets in the west.
You'll see wildlife and lots of picture-worthy views.
