Itinerary description
We left the ramp near the hamlet of Long lake about 10 am and headed northeast up the lake. The lake is an Adirondack treasure, oriented with the prevailing breezes, almost 10 miles long and about half a mile wide. A gentle breeze aided our progress up the lake directly toward the Seward Mountains. After about 7 miles we could view the Santanoni range to our right (east). After entering the Raquette River we found a lean-to and had lunch. We headed down river for another mile and turned right on the Cold River and proceeded up river for about .75 miles, impeded more by the shallow water than by the current. We found the lean-to and set up camp. While reading the entries in the logbook kept in the lean-to, it became apparent that the area had grown in significantly over the years, obscuring the view. The entries could be quite colorful. In the morning we headed down river again toward the Raquette River Carry.
