Itinerary description
It was 39 degrees and fog this morning when I loaded up at the house. 51 degrees at the 10:45 am DELAYED launch, biscuits and Mark were the reasons. Fog was present most of the drive up and then disappeared approaching launch time.
Launched in the very low water at Johnson's $5 landing. Was told motor boats were restricted from the lake due to low water. Did encounter 1 motorized boat. Proceeded out toward the old bayou and headed down toward the spillway.
We came across a blockage of Giant salvinia across the bayou. It was very thick and very very difficult to paddle through. The paddling with hip scooting seemed to work best. The author and some others elected to portage and the return leg.
Did not see much animals or birds but did enjoy the gray winter landscape of the trees and low angle sun. Nearing the end of the lake we pulled over and took a break on some of the little available 'high' land.
Decided to trek back towards the landing but to cut across to the open channel that would not have any upstream paddle flow. Yes, the old bayou had flow. We proceeded back upstream and attempted to cross over but could not find a viable trail to complete such. Low water levels were to blame. Made it back up to the same blokage but we all persevered.
Ambient weather conditions were beautiful. Launched in 49 degrees and pulled out in 59 air with hardly any winds. Overall a very satisfying paddle for a mid winter excursion.
