Itinerary description
Sweet, easy paddle with a couple of surprises!
Free concrete boat launch, with ample parking and a clean port-a-let. There was a possibility of launching from a wooden dock, but was kind of sketchy. Wind was around 7-8 miles per hour, so not too bad to paddle in. Anymore and trip would have been more strenous.
First surprise, and by far the best one was a rookery close to the Narrows. We could hear the birds way before we could see them. We viewed anhingas, egrets, herons and tree ducks. The only thing we had to watch out for were poop bombs! We stayed a long time in awe of this unbeknownst gem.
Next surprise was a floating picnic table! Had we known about this we would have brought a picnic lunch.
Word of warning, thanks to a local fisherman. In the wooded area around the Narrows and rookery, watch out for trot lines and fishing lines hanging from branches (limb lines). Limb lines were pretty much marked with flagging tape, but trot lines were almost invisible. Luckily paddling is a slow sport and even though we didn't see some trot lines until the last minute we were able to avoid the hooks.
