Itinerary description
This is a half day journey with four sections(legs) to paddle. It is imperative to use the tides, winds and currents to your advantage. Typically most currents and swells push in from 200 degrees(SSW). Kayaks and SUPs can be rented locally.
BRING: 3 liters water, snack, hat, long sleeve shirt, sunglasses, sunblock.
SAFETY: Whistle, life saver, mirror and/or flag.
LEG One: Paddle to Santa Catalina Island. On the leeward side of island, there are several channels within the reef to access the remote side beaches. There are a few tidal pools and semi-decent snorkeling.
LEG Two: Paddle to 3 Islets. On the east side of the western islet there is a beach landing area at mid to low tides. Great picnic spot and afternoon shade spot. Be sure to secure your kayak or SUP if doing any snorkeling. Expect small craft boat traffic from Coiba Island during early morning and mid to late afternoons.
LEG Three: Paddle from 3 Islets to Punta Roca to La Punta. Beware of powerfully DANGEROUS waves at these two surf spots. Stay clear of the wave impact zone and surfers.
LEG Four: Paddle up the Rio Estero from rivermouth at town beach. This is where locals moor their pangas. It gets shallow quickly. There are king fishers and other birds to watch.
I found a 3 foot dead bloated alligator floating after passing Punta Roca.
