Itinerary description
Decided to record this short and easy activity so that it is on the map in the area for others to view. Hopefully it gets added to a few itineraries and supports the local Wilderness businesses. Paddling here is a fun and nearly effortless activity and the waterfall can be impressive after George has received good rains. The surrounding area is very scenic and is still tranquil despite being close to a busy road. This recording’s starting point is from the Kaaimans River Lodge accommodation on the Western bank of the river. There are Kayaks and Canoe’s available for rental just near the bridge after taking the turnoff from the N2 and proceeding onwards past the parking area. This is the next best option to visit the falls if not staying at the River Lodge but note that it is very popular on long weekends, school holidays and in peak summer season around December to January. I would recommend arriving earlier or finding out if it is possible to prebook during these peak times if you don’t have your own vessel. Paddling along the river should not be limited to just visiting the waterfall, one can continue upstream under the N2 until the water becomes too shallow. Alternatively, one can paddle down to the mouth near the old railway bridge, all options are not too strenuous, very scenic and easy to access with the N2 national road nearby, just please take care of the outgoing tide, waves and other conditions if paddling near to the coast. The only obstacle on this recording which one might encounter is the tight squeeze through the rock walls just before the waterfall. Bumping into the walls and other paddlers might not always be avoidable. Just keep the mood light and try not to capsize if it gets congested here. Right after the passage the waterfall pool opens and there is ample space. You can moor on the far side near the shallow rocks to jump out to relax with the full view of the falls right in front of you. The water here can vary from a deep dark brown which is created from tannins in forest trees and fynbos roots to a siltier light brown after rains if clay soils have been disturbed. Either way note that the water is clean, not at all polluted and right upstream from George’s water supply which is fed from the Outeniqua Range. Enjoy this fun for the whole family Garden Route activity.
