Itinerary description
A lengthy kayak trip that started out with me smashing the screen of my phone just before starting the trek. So the track is hand drawn but gives a pretty accurate description of where I actually went. The trip took me just over three days but would be much better suited to 5 or even 6 days (I was paddling 10 to 12 hours per day). The difficulty with extending the trip is in finding suitable spots to camp. All three of my nights were 'wild' or 'stealth' camping and not at the best of sites (whatever I could find when I ran out of energy).
You will pass through several small towns (food, beverage and maybe even a place to stay). There are tons of cottages on this route and it is a mixture of rivers, small lakes and some large ones too. I completed the trip in mid-July and water levels were mostly fine. The north bound leg had some pretty strong currents to battle especially north of Coboconk and around Minden. Wind was a problem on Balsam.
I'd estimate there were around 21 portages, most of them short, longest would be under 1 km, the worst is at Moore's Falls where they force you to jog across the busy highway and trespass on private property.
Certainly not a highlight reel trip, but some nice falls near Kinmount and Norland, spotted a wide variety of wildlife (fox, deer, beavers, otter, tons of water fowl and an oddly located cow).
Not for everyone (no other trippers were encountered) but it is do-able, much easier going southbound (with the current) and fun was had.
