Itinerary description
We launched at the newly reopened area on the south side of US41about a mile east of Port of the Islands. Someone has decimated a lot of white mangroves and left the carcasses blocking the waterway, but we managed to push our way through.
We took the first cut into the Faka Union River lake system, a tight tunnel that opened into larger lakes, and paddled south to about 2 miles from where the river meets the Port of the Islands canal. The current was getting more robust in the narrow waterway since the low tide at the mouth was about 11:30 AM, so we decided to turn back.
We took a turn to the east into the marsh on the way back—the beautiful day... cool, windy, not too much sun.
