Itinerary description
We were going to do NWR Trail 1, but there were four pickups there when we arrived, which meant maybe a weekend youth hunting season, so we went to the Faka Union River instead. Slight fog, which made for some neat paddling. We went out through a narrow mangrove tunnel, then through a series of lakes down to a butterfly orchid in a dead tree that we'd been watching for years. It was blooming. Odd.
This is a great open water paddle with many bromeliads in the trees; on the way back, we took a shortcut that goes through a small lake and out into the marsh.
Warning - the US-41 access point is VERY muddy. Don't get stuck!!!!
