Itinerary description
The launch point is the fourth bridge after the Port of the Islands canal when headed east on US 41. Pull off to the right (south side) after going over the bridge and back up to the ramp. There is signage. You launch into a small cove and quickly enter a tunnel and out into a marsh.
Instead of turning right (west) into the mangrove tunnel that goes to the Faka Union River, stay on the marsh ditch trail almost directly south. The first mile is the easy part of the journey.
It rained about half a foot in this area recently, so the paddling was easy. The trail goes through flooded grass marshes, mangrove forests, lakes, and tunnels. If you fear getting lost or are not confident in your ability with a GPS, this may not be the trail for you.
