Itinerary description
With all the paddling we do in the swamps and marshes of SW Florida, we've never seen a python in the wild - until this morning, and if it hadn't been dead, we might never have seen it either. It was deep in a flooded marsh bordering the mangrove fringe around the lakes of the Faka Union River. Can't help but wonder what a big snake like that has been eating in such an isolated area to grow that big. No sign of how it died. Check out videos MAH 00325 and 326
Duck Season is still in the NWR, so we decided to paddle the Faka Union Marsh. Water is low, but we could paddle south to the "green wall." Lots of birds - herons, ibises, white pelicans, and ducks- all over the marsh. Dead tilapia and snook near US-41 but not in the marshes. Mac thinks it's from the cold.
