Itinerary description
We make this trip maybe once a year because it's a straight line paddling up a canal, but the wildlife can be fascinating. Today we saw maybe two dozen or more alligators (most of them small), swallow-tailed kites, a bunch of tarpon, a pair of black-bellied whistling ducks, a wild turkey flying across the canal right in front of us, and, near the landing, some deer. There's also a lot of unusual vegetation along the paddle. They said today was the hottest day since record-keeping started in the '70s, and I believe it. I drank two quarts of fluid, and neither was beer.
We took some drone footage of the canals, especially the filled-in one where they left a string of small wildlife ponds, and it appears to have become a playground for ATVs and off-roaders. I don't know if that's a good or bad thing.
If you want to paddle somewhere easy to access and where you can't get too lost if you're marginally challenged and are prepared for gunfire (in the other direction) at the firing range on the return trip, this is a great paddle.
