Itinerary description
Started the day on the Estero River in a Sitka XT that didn’t fit and finished it in a Kestrel 140 that fits. Estero River Outfitters' on-water trial service proved invaluable, allowing me to experiment with many kayaks until I discovered what Jay, Jack, Tom, and Jeff had been repeating: being able to get in and out are the first two requirements. As a former Army aviator, we held one maxim: "Takeoffs are optional, landings are mandatory" because it underscores the essentiality of successful landings in aviation, highlighting the critical nature of safe returns to the ground. Also applies to kayaking: Getting in might be a little tricky, but getting out after a paddle should be less tricky.
