As soon as we leave Hootalinqua we stop at a small island to visit the SS Evelyn, an old steamship abandoned on land.
Apparently, on the last trip of the season it was damaged, and they couldn't think of anything better than to take it ashore, to the center of the island, while it was repaired. The engine was taken off the steamer and taken away, but was not brought back and the ship was stranded forever, rotting. There are remains of the enormous pulleys that were used to lift it to land, although vegetation has covered the path they had to open to lift it. It makes quite an impression.
So much work for nothing... The state of the remains is very precarious, and it is a risk to get inside, so we take a walk around it and nothing more. It feels like it's going to collapse at any moment.
The smoke from the fires still surrounds us and we don't see the sun all day.
Today we are walking through an area burned a few years ago. It seems that he is recovering, but he still has a lot of growing to do. Logs and more dry logs. It must have been terrifying.
When we want to stop for lunch, but we are in a bit of a hurry, or we don't feel like getting off, we don't go near the shore. We simply put the canoes together and have a snack while the river continues to carry us forward.
In this area the river has many meanders. At the end of the day there is more vegetation, and everything looks much nicer.
We finished the day at the Big Salmon camp, next to the river of the same name. This is one of the large camps. It has a little plywood hut, a table to eat at, and some half-hidden latrines outside of maintenance, so what is left there stays there forever... It is very good, although a little high above the river, and you have to carry all the material to the top. Another huge advantage is that there is not a single mosquito.
All of this territory belongs to the First Nations, but campgrounds are allowed.
A little further away there is a cemetery, which we are going to visit. It is abandoned, by the looks of it, but it is very curious. The graves are surrounded by fences. It must be something traditional.
There is a team of workers cleaning the accesses so that they are free of vegetation. There are a couple of ruined cabins around here. Once again I am surprised that they worry about clearing the grass and bushes, but abandon the buildings, letting them collapse.
The shore is totally muddy, so there is no swimming today. Pity.
