Itinerary description
Circumnavigation of Deer Island should only be attempted by competent sea kayakers with good local knowledge.
WARNING: THE WESTERN HEMISPHERE'S LARGEST WHIRLPOOL IS LOCATED AT THE SOUTHERN END OF THE ISLAND OFF DEER ISLAND POINT.
Tide in the area can reach upwards to 5 knots which is the max speed of an average paddler. Knowledge of local tide and currents is essential. Armed with this knowledge, paddlers can circumnavigate the island in ~4 hours paddling time.
The island's offshore side offers many chances for marine wildlife sightings such as Finback and Minkie Whales, Seals, Porpoise, Eagles, Puffins, Gannets, and much much more.
The inshore side of the Island offers rugged cliffs, beautiful beaches and the Island's best kept secret: the hole in the wall.
