Itinerary description
This is a well-marked canoe trail perfect for any skill level. The launch point at Marker 1 is a flat, shallow slope accessed from a parking lot, or, kayaks are available for rental at the Pass by Marker 12. The trail goes through three bays of maybe a half mile each and through some mangrove channels and tunnels connecting the bays.
If you turn west at Marker 25 and hug the left side of the cove, there’s a mangrove tunnel heading toward the Gulf. It’s about 350 ft long, tight but easily navigable. There’s a landing wide enough for one boat and you can walk the 150ft. to the water’s edge or drag (carry?) your kayak and paddle back to the mouth of the Pass
There are two neat, but hard to find tunnels connecting the upper bay to a separate lake with a bird rookery island in the middle.
The tidal currents can affect your speed in the main channels. You’ll see two little side trips on the track. There are more. Don’t worry, you won’t get lost. The trail splits at marker 16 and joins again at Marker 17. Don’t get caught in a loop.
