Itinerary description
Part of our yearly inventory of Calusa Blueway trail markers.
First off - dead fish everywhere - too numerous to count. All kinds and sizes. Middle of the bay had small flounder, pinfish, pompano look-alike, batfish, and snapper, but mostly bloated and hard to identify. The back channels had mostly mullet and catfish. The smell was pretty bad in the tight channels, but a slight east wind in the open bay helped.
Of the 14 trail markers we checked, three were missing, one was lying down, and two were leaning a lot.
Absolutely fantastic day for a long paddle. No one is on the water. We maybe saw 1 or 2 boats every hour. The temperature was perfect, the tide was at medium level, and if it weren't for the smell, I'd give today an 11 out of 10.
