Itinerary description
Part of our yearly inventory and health check of trail markers. We send photos and a report to Lee County.
This was a fun paddle - a little over 10 miles long. The funnest (?) part was crossing Estero Bay before sunrise in a canoe in a dense fog, trying to paddle while keeping an eye on the compass that was too small to see well in the dark, but with a bit of correction, we hit Marker 16 (surprise!). I took a video in the middle of the bay. I don't know why - all you see is fog and the back of Duke's head. From Marker 16 on, we could see the mangroves but still had to make some corrections.
Tide was going out, and we only had to un-ass the canoe once to drag it across a sand bar. The currents in the Estero River were pretty intense, but the current was with us coming out. The fog hung above us the whole trip, so the sun wasn't harmful, and the water was calm until we ran into some motorized craft near the end.
Near the end, we ran into some buttheads on jet skis chasing a dolphin around us like we weren't even there. I took a video when the canoe stopped rocking.
