Itinerary description
NW Florida panhandle
17 Vehicles in a large 1 mile caterpillar like procession reminiscent of a funeral hauling 24 boats and around 26 peeps to a small spring fed creek south of I-10 to paddle 6 miles.
Elgin AF Base property. Access is free but a permit is required, check online within 24 for access status of paddle areas and be prepared to produce the permit.
Traveled down forest roads to a narrow bridge and a small drop off launch area. Clean sand boat ramp into untrusting invisible water.
Very slow paddle starting in a very narrow but pristine creek on a military base. No human structures. Flora makes this an attractive paddle because of the plentiful carnivorous Pitcher plant. Had a decent current and a lot of switchback and felled timber but like tiny, a small scale.
Pull out was a nominal sand bank at the edge of a bridge. Only useful to small craft and had adequate parking. No RR facilities or trash receptacles either end of this paddle.

Boiling Creek (spring fed) is located on the west side of Eglin AFB and is accessed off Hwy 87 to Navarre. Directions to start from campgrounds are two easy ways of your choice to travel to town of Holt and entrance 45 off Hwy 189 / to I-10.(follow signs to I-10). you can use your GPS to Holt, FL or follow highway 4 through Baker and at the two gas stations south of Baker take the right fork which is County Rd 189 and intersects with 90/189 to Holt. Access I-10 west for 14 miles to exit 31 at the Hwy 87 south to Navarre. Drive approximately 6 miles to road 211 on base. The gate entrance is well defined brightly painted. After crossing the Yellow River Bridge, there is a canoe access sign and road on left that leads to what will be the take out. Continue to the second access opening in the fenced area on the left which will be road 211. Follow road 211 to the Boiling Creek Bridge to unload boats and gear. Note : a person will need to be in the water to receive empty boats and direct them to a loading point. Again, this area is/will be congested being unloaded and move car as quickly as possible after boats are safely off the road area. Return cars back to paved area at entrance to shuttle to the take out. The paddle distance is 6.5 miles, 3.5 on Boiling Creek to Lunch spot on river left and confluence with Yellow River for three more miles to take out on river left at channel left upriver side of bridge.
Please take your sweet time and enjoy all that this beautiful spring river has to offer. You drove a long way to get here so don't be in a hurry and miss what it has to offer. The shuttle is just 2 mile back up 87 to just before the bridge.

Water in Florida generally appears clear and not so muddy as in Louisiana
