Itinerary description
Day 1 of a 3 day, 2 night trip (see catalog entry).
Put canoe in at side of road just after the Log Chute and just before the marina (ample parking at the side of the road). The road in will give you plenty of nice views of the Kennisis River and depending on where you launch it is a short paddle under the bridge to Big Hawk Lake (even better access point just to the left/west of the bridge).
Maintain your NW heading across the west end of Big Hawk Lake and on the north shore you will find a river with portage trail on the left shore. With a heavy canoe and full gear, I elected to walk/wade/paddle up the river. I could paddle most of the way, stepping out and lifting over about a half dozen times and finished the portage (listed at 1 km+) distance in about 20 or 25 minutes. Maxini hiked the portage trail and reports it was a full lane the entire way.
Continue northwest for about 2 km through the southern channel of Sherborne Lake until you hit the main portion of the lake. There are numerous great campsites that should be booked in advance (Haliburton Highlands Water Trails - online). Explore the lake and locate your campsite!
