Itinerary description
On the second day of the Benelux Packraft Meet-up, I join 7 other paddlers for a descent of the Sûre river from the sports center of Martelange to the Bigonville watermill. The day is gloriously sunny, which is just as well, as the night before has been bitterly cold, at least for those of us who spent the night in a tent at the camping in Berguème.
After a trip on the Sûre river last year, and one merely 2 weeks ago, I have come to know this river quite well. It is therefore not difficult to advise the rest of the group on how to best proceed. However, since the furthest I have ever been is until just before the Boulaide watermill, the dam at the latter is unknown territory. As it happens, it also turns out to be the most difficult of all dams on today’s trajectory. Several of the group therefore take a swim and one unfortunately even breaks his top-notch paddle. Later on we will hear that another group of paddlers also had one member who managed to break his paddle at the exact same location today! We can only assume that while bracing after jumping the dam, paddles may get stuck between rocks below the waterline and break. Interesting phenomenon.
