Itinerary description
13 souls and 1 doggo who all love being in the wind climbed into 12 floating thingys and bounced off the banks to stay in the center. Starting out on a double width concrete boat launch mostly free of vegetation. Side wings had grass grass for staging boats. Bank conditions here and mostly throughout the route were not favorable. The banks were short but high angle and slippery. Like when water levels drops exposing previously under water soils.
At launch and after the shuttle, recorded weather was 62 degrees with winds at 08 with an overcast ceiling @ 2,900 ft. Historical data at 3 pm was 64 degrees, ceiling down to 2,300 but winds at 16 mph gusting to 21!
After about 3 miles and before the big turn to the SE we took a side bayou and back tracked a paddle into a small bayou in Thistelwait WMA. First 3 miles winds were less than 10 and quartering tail winds. The remaining 6+ miles were direct 0 degree tailwind at up to 16. Coupled with a stout flow from the previous 24 hrs of significant rainfall garnered a float speed of 2.6 knots / 2.9 mph. Not bad baby.
This 10.6 total miles trip felt like a 5 miler. Outside of no real place for us to pull over, get out and take a break it was a very enjoyable paddle. New people along with long time friends coupled with very favorable weather created a lasting memorable experience of paddling the Ole Courtableau.

I was pleased to attend this paddle before my surgery on Bayou Courtableau from Washington to Port Barre, the Head Waters of Bayou Teche!
