Itinerary description

Great day on the River(s) Technically, we hit three, Old River, the Red and the Atchafalaya. The water was running pretty high, Thirty feet on the gauge on Old River, and about 28' on the Atchafalaya at Simmesport. Not flood-stage but getting up there with significant current. We played chicken with a marginal forecast that showed winds and weather arriving late afternoon, we stayed focused and beat the storm off the water. I left it as a "moderate" on technical difficulty but be aware that conditions on the big rivers can change quickly.

Easy access, more traffic (truck and trailer) today than last time we used this launch. We did see security patrolling the area.

Three Rivers

Still cruising Old River, the Red River is coming in from the right, and the Atchafalaya heads on to the South. The junction is hard to see in the photo, hard to identify in real time. Gray sky, flooded timber, many "false" points; variable winds and currents made it pretty hard to call the "point", but we found ourselves moving much faster as the current in Old River really picked up as we neared the junction. You have to pay attention here, conditions are constantly changing...

Just coasting, sideways, in a current that was running as much as three mph! I've never been in so much current with such calm waters.

Really hard to find a place to get off the water at this level. The sandbars and shallow banks are far under water. Steep slopes and brush pretty much lined the way with winds and current adding to the conversation.

We did find a pretty place! This would have made a fine camp site.

Railroad bridge at Simmesport. Serious current, stay away from fixed objects, like bridge abutments!

Public boat launch south of Simmesport. Current made it a challenge to get out of the channel and up the ramp. Great day on the river, beat the weather!
