Itinerary description
If you are headed out to volunteer at a permaculture farm, the least you could do is to get there without destroying the world by burning a lot of hydrocarbons. Paddling a kayak the 17 nautical miles each way seemed the trick, and 4 1/2 hours each way was also great exercise.
Aside from the 4 nm crossing of Rosario Strait due west of Anacortez' Washington Park, where you can leave a car overnight, the route was relatively calm and protected. Tides rip directly along Rosario Strait, with the flow heading north and the ebb south. The flow generally goes east into the core of the San Juan islands and the ebb flows generally west, but is not overly strong. Watch out also for fog; a compass was nightly useful.
This route includes a couple hundred extra yards on foot up Channel Road in Deer Harbor to the world-famous permaculture farm of the Bullock's (http://www.permacultureportal.com), for about 10 minutes of walking.
