Itinerary description
We set off shortly after sunrise, just as the tide reached a low and glassy calm. Stars twinkled overhead, and a gentle southerly breeze whispered across the water. Fish broke the surface all around us, but the scene was peaceful. Paddling was effortless until we neared John's Pass, where sandbars blocked our path.
Stan whipped out his drone. By the time he'd finished his aerial survey, the rising tide had begun to cover the sandbars enough for us to navigate the pass and reach the open waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Our return trip to Bayview found us dodging a steady stream of weekend boaters. Back at the dock, the Coast Guard was conducting vessel inspections, and we dodged the incoming parade of boaters on our way out. This is our first time seeing cars and trailers back to the Botanical Gardens.
