Itinerary description
We hit the water before dawn just east of the Goodland Bridge (25.933568, -81.649664). A gentle breeze pushed us north through Hell's Gate (25.939416, -81.630283). The shallows of Palm Bay tested our paddling skills for a bit. There were no campers at Grocery Place Campground (25.951794, -81.613957), so we continued our paddle up Royal Palm Hammock Creek, though it was teeming with midges and mosquitoes.
Reaching Mud Bay (25.960166, -81.604402), we maneuvered the canoe near a shoal to let Stan capture drone footage. A minor technical challenge--we'd drifted south--and Stan manually landed the drone at our new location, adding a touch of adventure. Mac paddled along the mangroves and reeled in several ladyfish, a small snook, and a whopper of a snook--see the photo!
The return trip brought a majestic encounter: a five Swallow-tailed Kite morning! A solid current greeted us, so we strategically bypassed Hell's Gate for calmer waters, entering Goodland Bay a mile east. Paddling into the sunrise capped off this perfect adventure! Drop Anchor Mobile Home Park
