Itinerary description
Paddle three into the Fakahatchee Marsh dawn painted the cordgrass gold as we paddled deep into the Fakahatchee Marsh, weaving through tight channels and pushing past stubborn stalks. Mac and Stan, eagle-eyed scouts, periodically stand tall in their canoes, searching for clear paths.
Then—boom! Open water unfolds, and new mangroves appear along the fringes. Ospreys circled, eyeing large Gar that shimmered beneath the surface, leaving brown streaks in their wake. Ducks erupt in flurries, their whispers filling the hush. From tangled roots, boattail grackles shriek a welcome. There were tree swallow escorts along several transects, darting among the mangroves. A Bonaparte's Gull and wood stork graced our paddle.
"Marsh life," Duke grins, already adorned with spiderwebs despite his "Haley"—the Vasey niece from St. Louis—paddle stroke to remove spiderwebs, chuckling, "Gotta love it."
