Itinerary description
We were out before sunlight pierced the mangrove canopy. With each stroke, our canoe advanced, unveiling clear passageways that provided good views of the bottom. Above, clouds drifted like galleons, their cotton sails capturing the breeze. Below, schools of small fish flashed like quicksilver, contrasting with patches of new mangroves that are stealing marsh areas that, in time, will prove fatal to birds who rely on these places for habitat and food.
We saw a small flock of Common Mergansers moving away from us. A single blue crab and a large flock of ibis; we also saw swarms of tree swallows with a mixture of heron and wood stork.
