Itinerary description
A must do hike if you are in Zermatt giving you the chance to see the majestic Matterhorn from many angles and to have stunning lakes pictures. You can start hiking from Zermatt but i recommend taking the funicular from Zermatt to Sunnegga (about 5 min trip, 25 CHF return ticket). From Sunnegga to the next cable station Blauherd, follow the clear dirt trail (la piste). Eventhough you will have beautiful views of the Matterhorn, the cable cars are not nice to see around in this section of the hike. Most of the ascent is here as well. If you want to skip this part, you can take the cable car to Blauherd and start the hike from there (I'm a big fan of loops and i won't do this :p). From Blauherd, starts the proper 5 lakes trail (5-seenweg signs). There is a beautiful sport next to Blauherd where you can have beautiful photos with the Matterhorn in a "heart frame". The lakes trail is fantastic with a mix of dirt roads and footpaths. The first lake (Stellisee) is the most visited and most photos of a lake with Matterhorn in the background are taken here. The 2nd lake (Grindjisee) is nicely found on the way down the valley with trees all around. Grünsee (the 3rd lake) is reached after a moderate ascent. The trail between 3rd and 4th lake (Mosjesee) goes down to the valley and the most beautiful part of the trail. After crossing a wooden bridge, you will reach Mosjesee. From here, you will start your final ascent to the starting point. The 5th lake (Leisee) is found just before reachIng Sunnegga. A cabine shuttle can take you up to Sunnegga if you feel tired at this point or you can continue a 10-min walk (my recording). I strongly recommend this amazing hike. Having the Matterhorn as a background will make your pictures stunning and your memories unforgettable!
