Itinerary description
To ride the Odontotos train, purchase your tickets in advance from their official website.
The trail runs alongside the train tracks within Vouraikos Gorge. You can disembark at either Kalavryta and start your descent from there, or at Mega Spilaio (Zachlorou). The train journey to Zachlorou from Diakopto takes approximately 45 minutes. Booking train tickets in advance is recommended, as they often sell out quickly. You can purchase them online at Odontotos official website.
The trail is relatively easy, but caution is needed as you will be following the train tracks. The trail is covered with small rocks, so it's highly recommended to wear hiking boots with good soles. Be especially careful when crossing the metal bridges, as they can be slippery due to dust and humidity.
Make sure to check the train departure schedule for both Diakopto and Kalavryta. You don't want to be on the trail, especially at the metal bridges, tunnels(a headlamp or a small torch is recommended), or narrow sections, when a train is passing through. Double-check the timetable for the date of your visit, as there might be additional trains running beyond the usual schedule. While train drivers are aware of hikers and proceed with caution, you should always be alert, since the train horn or the sound of an approaching train can be masked by the loud noise from the river.
The best time to visit is during the spring when the weather is warmer, the trees and greenery flourish, and the river is full.
Enjoy.
