Itinerary description
This is a circular hiking route through a protected agricultural rural landscape of grape vineyards, olive and almond plantations, massive fig trees and vegetable plots. The easy path follows along mostly flat asphalt and dirt roads, under the imposing presence of the Montgó. The route begins at the Xabia Cemetary and passes through the wetland grasses and the Valls of the Montgo where it is common to see local farmers harvesting their crops of the season. After the Valls you turn left along a dirt path until you get to a magnificent carob tree that keeps an 800 year old Millenial Olive Tree company. It is located just at the feet of the Montgo making it a spectacular impact with its perimeter, measured at a height of 1.3 m from the ground, as 9.3 m and stretching upward to 7 m. It’s a great place to have a picnic and seek shade on a sunny day. The Millenial Olive Tree has been present here since Muslim times and is a living sculpture that still produces olives.
Sunday’s are popular with families enjoying the walk and surroundings while cyclists join the trail as well. Every Sunday there is a market in the town of Jesus Pobre so many people walk the trail to go to the market. It takes place in the center of town in a “Riurau”which used to be used by farmers who after scalding grapes would then be dried for raisins. The grapes were laid on reeds in the riurau to protect them from dew during the night. You will pass the Plaza of the Convent where the Jesus Pobre Church and convent are. You pass down a narrow road (Carretera de Cementeri)and make your way past the Jesus Pobre Cemetery until you come to CV 738. Once there continue straight onto Carretera de Mellet and follow the trail back to Cemetary Road where you began.
