Woodsdale Regional Park is most certainly something special in Butler County, just 45+ minutes north of the heart of Cincinnati. Sitting alongside the Great Miami River, this quiet, clean park is a charming respite from the surprising amount of traffic that exists around this mostly farmland area. While you might hear some occasional shots fired off from the nearby Butler County Sheriff's target practice range (don't worry - you're safe and protected here), the most noise you'll hear is the wind in the leaves and the flowing river. This park can occasionally close from flooding but when it's open, it's a walker, hiker, bird watcher, trail runner, or caretaker's dream as all trails are pretty much flat and not all that long.
The Sam Augspurger Trail or orange trail is the longest and goes along the perimeter of the whole park for a tour of various trails that are mowed grass through shrubs, alongside some crops and a beekeeper's hive, into a heavily forested area with heavily packed dirt and leaves, and alongside the Great Miami River. Several bird viewing huts with windows give you a hideout to take in the cardinals and woodpeckers amongst other birds around.
The orange trail is, perhaps, the least conspicuously marked. Trail markers exist especially for other trails that combine with the orange but it will definitely benefit you to reference the map, even if walking along the border seems obvious. Several non-official off-shoots might throw you, but be sure to take one or two along the river to get your water fix in.
This is a fantastic park and delightfully clean and well-cared for. To extend your trip, head a 1/2 mile down the road to the Chrisholm Historic Farmstead, once home to Sam Augspurger, himself.
