Itinerary description
A decent length walk on the outskirts of Melbourne!
This was my first time to Woodlands Historic Park - which I knew was famous for kangaroos and views of planes / Melbourne Airport. It has both in abundance.
This walk goes through a bandicoot sactuary and you can see the difference in the quality of the grasslands between the areas inside and outside the bandicoot sanctuary.
We walked up Gellibrand Hill where you can usually get good views of the airport but it was rainy and a bit misty on the day we went, so the views were not as good as they might otherwise have been. There are some old homestead ruins there and a lot of introduced plant species nearby.
Throughout the park there are plenty of beautiful river red gums - these are the highlight of the whole walk. Next time I'll take more time to explore the trees and go off trail more - but it was not really possible with a fast-moving group.
You could shorten this walk fairly easily by cutting the loop at the start. Devonshire Tea and the Homestead cafe was good!
Enjoy!
