Itinerary description

What to do in a daytrip to from Mestia to Ushguli?

Ushguli - Europe's highest and inhabited village at 2200 meters. Despite the fact that the rise of tourists has put its mark on the place, it is still functioning as usual with agriculture work. Harvesting food in the summer while the animals grass in the mountains.

First take a shared 4WD transportation from Mestia to Ushguli with return for 25 GEL/pax (2018 Prices). MAKE SURE YOU CHOOSE THE DRIVER/COMPANY THAT LET'S YOU STAY 5 HOURS IN USHGULI and not just 3 Hours as other offers.

Do a quick hike from Ushguli village, through Inguri river, to a point where you can already see Shkhara Glacier, depending on your time you can continue walking further. In case you need there's always some sort of transportation (for sure payed) in both directions.
Back to the village, you can visit and climb the svan towers, at least the one sprayed 5 GEL... (wow graffiti in an UNESCO classified monument...)

Travel tips for Georgia:
- Avoid long waiting queues to buy train tickets (specially in Tbilisi), just buy them online: https://beta.tkt.ge/railway
- If you want a bit more comfort than traveling in Marshrutkas, try Georgian regular buses (keep in mind that the insane driving style will still be present): http://www.georgianbus.com/?lang=_eng
- Grabbing a taxi is a challenge in Georgia, in Tbilisi for a regular 5 GEL round, drivers can actually ask you for 29 GEL!!! If you don't have patience for negotiation, use Taxify app.

Terrible trail recording. Stops at the river. The glacier is much further.
