One of the essential stops on the Icefield Parkway is one of its famous glaciers, we tell you what we can see when visiting the Athabasca Glacier.
The Athabasca Glacier is one of the biggest attractions in the area. It is one of the largest masses of ice below the Arctic Circle, for this and many other reasons it was declared a World Heritage Site.
What is the Athabasca Glacier
This glacier has an area of 6 square km and is as many kilometers long. It is surrounded by mountains, and we are already in the Jasper National Park. The Athabasca Glacier is located between peaks such as Mount Athabasca (3,500 meters above sea level), or Wilcox Peak with about 2,900 meters, among many others.
Alberta, along with British Columbia, is a privileged area because with its altitude, low temperatures for much of the year, and very heavy snowfall, the Athabasca ice sheets are between 100 and 300 meters thick. Despite this, this glacier recedes year by year, as can be seen on the information panels that indicate the decades of receding, leaving us with much to think about. Since studies indicate that about 5 meters per year are being lost
Wilcox Pass
We recommend doing this route when visiting the Athabasca Glacier. It is on the mountain in front of the Glacier, just a few minutes away by car and allows you to see it all the time.
In addition, it is one of the places where you can find the red chairs, you can see the complete map here, so the views of the entire area are very impressive.
The route runs through a forest where we will find some viewpoints with views of the mountains and the valley as well as the glacier in the distance. Along the way we will find a wooden structure to overcome a part of it but as we say, it is simple.
Upon reaching the chairs, the route we are following continued and it looked very good with the snow but as we say, we returned to the glacier since it was clearing and we could not miss the opportunity since we could not see it before.
