Itinerary description
This is a circular tour centred on Whitwell-on-the-Hill. I reached it by the Coastliner bus from Leeds, but I am sure there will be roadside parking in Whitwell.
It starts by following the A64 back to Leeds, but then turns off to follow a quiet country road down to Mains Lane where the field walking starts. Mostly the tour follows field boundaries as this is arable land. You need to keep a sharp eye out for the post markers.
In Bulmer Hag Wood, it is easier to follow the main path through the wood. The side path I used was not easy to spot and then was very overgrown with brambles and the track it led to could not be used since it was under cultivation.
Coming out on to Mains Lane again, my route led me to Welburn, but I think the route can be usefully shortened to go around Bank Nursery.
At the end of Whitwell Road, which is a lane, I had planned to return via Tout Hill to the A64, but decided to walk along the A64 to speed my progress and so catch the return bus (they are every 30 minutes.)
I'm not sure this tour has much going for it - I know I didn't enjoy it.
