Itinerary description
NOTE: there was a glitch in my recording from mile 3.4 to 3.9 so actual trail mileage is closer to 8.4 along with a bit more elevation gain.
This is a little used GORGEOUS trail that requires a bit of rough road driving skills and an all-wheel/4-wheel, high-clearance vehicle to get there. Following Sliger Mine Rd to the trailhead was it’s own adventure. You’ll know you’re getting close when you see the “Cherokee Bar” ASRA sign off to the right once you’re driving down the rough dirt road.
The Sliger Mine is approx 2 miles from the trailhead so you could turn-around there to create a shorter hike. However, the astonishing beauty of the huge boulders and rockfalls along with Canyon Creek is worth doing the full 8.4 miles.
The views of the Middle Fork of the American River were magnificent and the sounds of the rapids far below (including Ruck-a-Chucky) are a perfect accompaniment to the day along with the spicy aroma of the California Bay leaves.
Canyon Creek is a great place to have your lunch. Even at this dry time of year, the sound of the water gurgling over the boulders was lovely to listen to. I imagine it must be quite a symphony in the Spring.
The trail to cross the creek definitely needed confident “mountain goat” skills and this hiker was not going to attempt it. Per the articles I found (see links below), the trail ends shortly after the creek at a road and private property.
The trail surface was great but due to it’s low usage, there is an area of tall grasses/bushes from approx mi .8 to 1.2 that requires you to “plow” through. The Horsetail Grass (?) and Spanish Broom (?) grow thick and tall along this stretch of the trail. Their thick woody stems can catch your foot to trip you. There is lots of creeping vines and blackberry bushes along the whole length of the trail that can also trip you. It wasn’t annoying but one must be aware!
I found this trail magical and gorgeous. Seeing the old Sliger Mine and that rock wall was like taking a step back in history. I would definitely do this trail again.
