Itinerary description
Via di Francesco - Way of St. Francis
Our walk from Stia to Camaldoli was 20 km with a total ascent of 1039 meters. We topped out mid-day at an elevation of 1225 meters. Another beautiful day of hiking. We climbed steadily out of Stia into beech and pine forests. A stop for a picnic lunch refreshed us for the last steep ascent on the trail before joining a little used road for a walk through the clouds along the ridge line. The road descended through primordial forest delivering us to the monastery of Ermo di Camaldoli. After a tour of the monastery, we stopped for an espresso at the monastery café. Ian arrived as we were savoring our coffee. The three of us set off in the rain for the final 3 kilometer walk to our lodging at Foresteria del Monastero di Camaldoli. What a wonderful place to stay. We have our window open and look out onto the rushing stream below. No dinner here this evening so across the street to Albergo Ristorante Camaldoli for food soon. One day closer to Assisi.
Just before 5:30 pm, Ian knocked on our room door and invited us to attend Mass with him. It was Ian, Julia, and I and eight monks, two nuns, and two elderly Italian women. What a wonderful experience.
