Itinerary description
Via di Francesco - Way of St. Francis
Today we walked 17.8 km from Passo della Consume to Stia. We had a total ascent of 543 meters but a total descent of 1097 meters. We lost all of yesterday’s climb. The day started with the mountains shrouded in mist, but last night’s rain had blown past. By mid-morning the sun was breaking through and the day was warming up. Much of the day was spent on small single track forest trails. The twists and turns and stream crossings where an interesting change from the farm roads of the first two days. After the final stream crossing about 6 km from Stia there is a change to the trail route. The new trail stays left at the well-marked fork and continues around a spur of high ground before turning back to Stia. Sandy’s original route goes right at the fork up and over the high ground on a more direct route. Sandy’s route is not being maintained and there are several dead falls and overgrown sections. The change is at N 43.80644 E 011.66321. Both trails join up at N 43.79756 E 011.66943 and continue into Stia.
There are no longer rooms available at the Domus Pacis hostel of Santa Maria Asunta church. We are staying across the street at Albergo Folterona. As we walked around the square, we also noticed a sign for B&B La Guardia (N43.80155° E11.70691°). A cute small B&B as an option to Albergo Folterona. Tomorrow on to Camaldoli!
