Itinerary description

The Oak Ridge Equestrian Area and the Washburn Gate Area are in Hillsborough County and are part of the Lower Hillsborough Wilderness Preserve. The lands are managed by the Southwest Florida Water Management District. It is a 1000 acre area on the east side of Morris Bridge Road. The area contains pine flatwoods and forested wetlands.

I entered through a gate near the entrance to Flatwoods Park. The primary access point is about 2.5 mile NE. Parking is an issue at the Flatwoods Park gate as much of the area is designated No Parking. At the Washburn gate, about 0.3 mi NE, there is parking behind a locked gate where a free day-use reservation is required.

While most of the roads/trails would be suitable for mountain biking the area is designated for hiking and equestrian use only.

Most of the days trip was on easy to travel two-track. About a mile of the trek was on a red blazed trail near the river that was difficult to follow.

There is an area map posted near the Washburn gate. The map has numbered intersections. These numbers are also posted along the area trails. I created waypoints at the numbered intersections I passed. A photo of the area map is associated with waypoint "Wash X1."
