Itinerary description

Ware - Stanstead Abbotts - Rye House - Stanstead Abbotts - Ware.

From Ware take the New River Path to Stanstead Abbots then take the Hertfordshire Way to Rye House. There is an option to walk through Rye Meads Nature Reserve and RSPB Reserve visitor centre if open with an alternative route available if it is not open. Continue via footpaths to Stanstead Abbotts (café and pubs) then return to Ware via Amwell Nature Reserve. Most of the footpaths have a hard surface and are suitable for all year round use. The footpath from Amwell Nature Reserve to Tumbling Bay via the bank of the River Lee (not River Lee Navigation) may be slightly muddy in places but alternatives mud-free routes are available.

If the RSPB Rye Meads Visitor Centre is open, it is possible to walk the footpaths through the reserve. As of Feb 2022, there was no charge for admission on foot but there was a charge for car parking for non-RSPB members. If the RSPB Rye Meads Visitor Centre is not open, continue along Rye Road then turn left on Stanstead Abbotts Public Bridleway 019 or Stanstead Abbotts Public Footpath 023 (more direct) to bridge under A414

River Lee at Tumbling Bay

Cross the footbridge over the River Lee by the weir at Tumbling Bay then walk to Star Street and into Ware Town Centre. An alternative route that is slightly longer but with less road walking is to stay on the same side of the River Lee at Tumbling Bay and continue to the footbridge across the River Lee Navigation. Then walk into Ware Town Centre
