Itinerary description
Day 1 of five day hiking trip.
This moderate hike started at the Cow Creek Trailhead. Our Footpaths of the World driver dropped us off and we hiked back to town. We wandered through a sunny valley before turning for the gem lake trail. Moderate ups with some traverse. We hiked in to Balanced Rock and had lunch there. The rest of the hike up to gem lake was moderate. The lake is really old and really shallow. The way down is a series of steep stairs made from the boulders. I was glad of my poles! (Also glad this was our descent!!) At the bottom of the trail we continued on to the Stanley Hotel and a well deserved beer.
*technical note - wikiloc elevation was way off - at some point it said we were -45000 feet! We actually started at 7800 and climbed to 8830 at gem lake before descending into Estes park.
