Itinerary description
The Muliwai Trail from WaipioValley to WaimanuValley is a seven mile arduous hike through beautiful Hawaiian rainforest. It starts out flat as you cross the WaipioValley but soon gets VERY steep as you climb on the Z trail section up about 1200 ft as you leave Waipio.
Once you have climbed out of WaipioValley, you will find the trail eases off but there is an almost constant descent/ascent cycle as you hike into and out of the many drainages along the coast.
We were lucky to have people very familiar with the local flora and fauna in our party who could tell us what we were seeing along the way. The vast majority of trees are actually not "native" in that they were introduced by humans. Ironwood, eucalyptus and many others that make up the majority of the forest fall into this category. You do see some native trees such as ohia.
This hike is not a casual stroll but for those who are in decent physical shape and interested in getting away from the tourist crowds and seeing some spectacular Hawaiian landscape, this hike is hard to beat.

Awesome! Good effort hiking this roller coaster profile. I hope to hike this early next year: how was the campsite and did you filter water from streams along the way?
Thanks, Eric
