Itinerary description

Jan 25, 2012 11:56 am Waipa Ranch Trail

I enjoy trying to find new trails and ones that aren’t in all the guide books.

For no other reason except this is where I started, I call this one Waipa Ranch Trail. The trail begins at the back of the Waipa Ranch property. There is another longer way to begin the trail and it can be identified in Google Earth further down the north shore. I took the direct route which was through the open front gate and a couple of noisy dogs. I couldn’t find anyone to check in with so I continued. I will do this hike again and I will again look for someone to ask for permission to cross through the property.
The trail is more or less an old unused road to the radio tower on Makaihuwaa Ridge above Hanalei Bay. The hike winds up around the hillside for 1.3 miles reaching a top altitude of 567 GPS feet on the trail. It is an easy hike but does go through some overgrown places since it is not an official hiking trail. There are some nice views along the way. There is a hunters kennel at the beginning with around 7 hungry dogs that test your nerves. The whole hike up and down takes less than an hour. It is a much less strenuous hike than the Okolehao Trail on the other side of the Hanalei Valley.
