Itinerary description
An eleven-mile loop from low point at Hunter's Checkin (~5700 feet) through the mid-hike high point (~7600 feet). Go early to get above treeline before clouds form and you are rewarded with beautiful views of Central Maui Valley, West Maui Mountains, and Lanai. The trail is a little hard to follow in the upper section of the Waiakoa section, this GPS route should help you find your way back to the trail. We saw goats high above us and a pig carcass along the trail. I heard a pheasant call but didn't see any. Parts of the trail are so smooth you can gawk at the view without tripping. Other parts are over rough aa lava and you need to pay attention to foot placement.
