Itinerary description

This is a wonderful trail with great views all along the way. The main track from the road down to the old stone bridge is easy going alongside the river on the valley floor. The trail starts off as a dirt road and then becomes a well-worn footpath.

Don’t forget to turn with the dirt road all the way to where it ends at a small, wooden footbridge over the water. On the other side there is a small settlement of interesting old buildings that have been restored back to life, plus an old stone church. There are myriad picnic benches here for a lunch break too. It’s well worth exploring.

After looking at the old buildings, head back up to where the dirt road turns off and the foot trail begins. Follow this for about another half mile to the old stone bridge.

Having lunch in the cool shade of the bridge with the water trickling past is wonderful. After the bridge, if you wish to continue, you are presented a choice of going either right or left. Either way presents a steep and challenging climb up the sharp hillsides, involving lots of switchbacks and tough going. It’s definitely much more challenging than the first part of the hike.

Be warned: do not try to tackle the Sentier du Christ. From the main track, the headway of this sub-trail appears to be a little overgrown but manageable. But once venturing through the brush and up the trail for a while it just disappears into meandering goat trails. The slope is very steep and treacherous, and there is no marked trail at all. We wasted nearly an hour trying to find the right path before giving up entirely and heading back down the way we came.
