About the Trek:
Jebel Shams is the highest mountain in Oman and second tallest in the Arabian Peninsula with an altitude of 3,028m.
This hike is known as W4 route and Rim walk to the summit. For trekkers in the middle east or the ones visiting the region, this W4 trek would surely be on the bucket list.
The trek is relatively between advanced to moderate depending on individual fitness, endurance and experience. The overall route is beautiful with some serious jaw-dropping scenery, gusting winds and occasionally sub-zero temperature in winter months.
Though the real summit is where the military base is located (the two domes) and not accessible for civilians, the false summit provides some sense of achievement.

The path is straightforward, well maintained and visibly marked. But DON'T be fooled, as most of Oman’s mountain the terrain is harsh and uneven. Therefore, do not underestimate this path. Although markings are very visible, BUT this is NOT a TRAIL. Most of the trek is boulder-hopping on small rocks with occasional stairs few spots. There is walking trail but no more than 20% of the 24 kms route.

This is a long day of hiking and might take anywhere between you 10 to 14 hours to complete the full trek. It essentially depends on the fitness level and trekking experience. Alternatively, it can be split in two days with an option to camp near the summit; we did in single day.

Essentials:
• You have to treat this hike seriously since you have a long day ahead of you. So pretty much you need to have all the hiking gear.
• Strong backpack with waist straps, sturdy mid-cut hiking boots, minimum 7L water, breakfast + 2 meals, sun cream, sunglasses, emergency blanket, head-light, lighter, hat, trekking poles, fruits, electrolytes, fleece jacket, light woolens, head scarf/bandana, mobile (signal is available in parts on the trail), battery bank, first-aid kit
• And inform someone knows when you are starting the hike and when you expect to return.
• Start at 5am if that’s possible so you can make use of full day light.
